How Can You Support a Small Business Today?

Did you know that Ontario has a thriving entrepreneurial landscape with more new businesses being started every day?

In fact, you probably know someone in your close circle who has started their own business.

Now ask yourself, when was the last time you supported them – by buying directly from them or showing your support?

I know your mind is racing with prices going up and the shift in the economy and government creating more questions than answers but … we can all make a difference.

For example - I want you to take a minute and think about your week ahead, what’s on your to-do list?

Maybe groceries, buying a new book or finding a present for your friend’s birthday.

Now, I want you to consider buying any or all of these from your local businesses.

What are some other ways that you can support your friend’s business, your family’s business or your local small businesses?

Natalie Franke Doodle showing six ways to support your small biz friends.

#1. Show them some love!

Most small businesses are on social media and so are you! Many business owners spend a lot of time crafting the right message to get their brand noticed and keep their followers up-to-date with their latest news.

It goes along way to see you engage with their posts by liking, commenting and sharing their content.

#2. Recommend businesses!

One of the best ways to show your support is through word of mouth. Talk about a small business you love and recommend them to your friends and family. This will help them get new customers, new followers and grow their brand awareness.

#3. Write a review!

Reviews are so helpful for a small business as this shows their brand as a trusted place to buy from, making it easier for others to make the decision to purchase their product or service.

Write a positive review on their website, socials page or simply drop them a DM to tell them your thoughts on the product which they can then share across their platforms.

#4. Send them a personal message!

Often small businesses are only one person. A personal message can make someone's day! So, message your friend, family member or favourite business owner to let them know how much you love their business and why.

#5. Buy from them!

There are many ways to support a small business by spending nothing at all! BUT, nothing will support them more than buying from them.

The next time you want to buy something for yourself or have a birthday coming up, make the choice to buy from a small business to support instead of reaching for giant retailers. It may be less convenient, but that money goes so much further for a small business owner.

#6. Raise them up by helping them grow!

This final tip is a little different.

Running your own business is challenging. It’s so easy to get lost in all the moving parts. So, recognize a business owner’s hard work, their creativity, their bravery.

And avoid – at all costs – minimizing their choices and efforts. Please do not ask your friend or family member to give you or do something for free.

Our local small businesses need our support.
